Viola did two things simultaneously that she had never done before: she screamed, and she fainted.
Later she would say that she’d simply taken a step back, tripped on root, and fallen down, banging her head on a rock, hard, which caused her to black out. But she knew, and Tom knew, and Tom’s Ma knew, that Viola had fainted.
Tom and his Ma were good people, though, and waited until she came to again before they teased her about it. Only the truly wicked make fun of a girl while she’s unconscious.
